Hot Fun in the Summertime

Live in each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit.

- Henry David Thoreau

Yeah, HDT knew what he was talking about. Summer is almost here and its got to be the most sensuous of the seasons.

Be on the look out for:

Ripe cantaloupe and peaches so juicy you embarrass yourself.

Popsicles, but be careful crossing the street.

Warm, brown, bare skin that smells of coconut oil

Shirtless neighbor boys mowing.

Top down on a hot summer night, with Carlos Santana playing Smooth on the radio. Turn it up, Man! that song makes me sweat.

Thumping on the watermelons to find a ripe one

The crack of a bat and a screaming line drive to knock in the winning run.

The smell of fireworks

Lightening Bugs flickering in the backyard.

Proudly serving up your first homegrown tomato of the season.

Bob Evans Strawberry Lemonade, 7-11 Vanilla Coke Slurpees, beer so cold that it is slushy.

A cool shower then diving into clean sheets right before you go to bed

Free Shakespeare in the park.

6am in July

Succumbing to heat induced lethargy and taking an afternoon nap.

Aloha shirts.

Lifeguards in Speedoes

Getting so sweaty you are slippery with a good friend or lover.

So Then I asked Sweet Southern Markus

He hails from Alabama and knows something about heat and humidity. And he added:

"How about this one to start?" :

Night of the south winds - night of the large few stars! Still nodding night - mad naked summer night.

-Walt Whitman (1819-1881) "Song of Myself," Leaves of Grass (1855)

ice blue Seersucker suits on Sunday morning

Night cicadas chirping so loud they hurt your ears

chlorine wafting up from the neighbor's pool

barbeque and potato salad in paper plates so full they overflow

dogs panting under the shade of the porch when its too hot to come out and bark

sticky summer sweat; humidity sweat that clings to your dress shirt collar

the ice blast as you walk into an air-conditioned building

summer band music in the park gazebos

doubling back around in your car to watch the jogging jock from the athletic field

sticky hand cranked homemade peach ice cream

watermelon rinds thrown over the nearby fence

mosquitoes that are big enough to carry off children

holding your shirt open while standing directly in front of a window air conditioner

"How about some more. I am relishing the southern hot summer coming"

singeing hot steering wheel

misplaced sunglasses

trips to the farmers market for corn sold out of the back of trucks

beautiful muscled and smiling farm boys selling produce from trucks un-hooked bib cover-alls draping over farm boys one shoulder

fat babies in diapers being dipped down in back yard wading pools

okra from the neighbor for frying in black skillets

riding with the froth sweat from your horse's flanks

garden teas on manicured antebellum grounds

hot Walmart parking lots

farm boys, period :-)

OK, what are we missing? Let's see your list.
