Bob Dill, the singing Pickle

You may or may not know this, but I was raised by a tribe of hippies, complete with a magic bus that followed the Grateful Dead around. The rents sold beads, jewelry and tie-dye in the parking lot before the shows. It wasnt a bad way to grow up. I was exposed to a lot of good music early. According to mom, I used to entertain anyone that would listen with an interesting rendition of Casey Jones You know riding that train, high on cocaine

Now days, DFS would have me removed from the family

However, none of us kids liked Bob Dylan much; in fact we called him Bob Dill the singing pickle. We didnt get Bob Dill, his voice was weird and he didnt sing about fun stuff like Yellow Submarines or an Octopus Garden. Bob Dill sang about politics. He was angry about something, but young JJ didnt know what

Monday night, Mysterious Mikey and I went to see Dylan play. His voice is still weird, but now I appreciate that his voice is filled with character. The Pickle has a 40 year old catalog of songs to sing and he performed a little something from every decade.

In my life, I have seen dozens of long-haired granola girls perform Blowing in the Wind but Mikey and I have been to the mountain now. We have heard Dylan himself ask How many deaths will it take til we know, that too many people have died? I didnt think of Vietnam, I thought of the DC Sniper and Iraq and Sept 11.. Dylans anger is timeless.

A native Minnesotan, Bob Dill, the singing pickle dedicated The Times They are A-Changin to Paul Wellstone.

Come senators, congressmen

Please heed the call

Don't stand in the doorway

Don't block up the hall

For he that gets hurt

Will be he who has stalled

There's a battle outside

And it is ragin'.

It'll soon shake your windows

And rattle your walls

For the times they are a-changin'.

If you want to honor Wellstones memory, dont forget to vote next Tuesday

Dylan ended the set with the murky All Along the Watchtower. Always a classic, although I like the Hendrix cover better. He didnt play Tangled Up in Blue He can ROCK for an old guy.
